On the Unique Existence of Pure - Strategy Nash Equilibrium in Smooth Asymmetric Contests

چکیده

There can be three types of heterogeneity among players in a rent-seeking contest. First, the efectiveness of agent's efort on the winning probabilities may difer among players. Secondly, players may evaluate the rent or prize of the rent-seeking contest diferently. Thirdly, players may face diferent financial constraints. Without assuming that each player’s production function for loteries is diferentiable, Yamazaki (2008) proves under standard assumptions in the literature that there exists a unique pure-strategy Nash equilibrium in a general rent-seeking contest with these three types of heterogeneity among players. In this article, assuming the diferentiability of each player’s production function for loteries, we give a simple proof of Yamazaki’s (2008) result. JEL Classification Numbers: C72, D43, L13.

Intra-Group Heterogeneity in Asymmetric Contests with Free Riding

This article analyzes an asymmetric rent-seeking contest with free riding where valuation on the prize (rent) and effectiveness of rent-seeking effort may differ among agents and the victory of an agent may not exclude some agents other than the winner of the contest to consume the prize of the contest. After proving the unique existence of pure-strategy Nash equilibrium, this article examines ...

Existence of a pure-strategy Bayesian Nash equilibrium in imperfectly discriminating contests

We consider a general class of imperfectly discriminating contests with privately informed players. We show that findings by Athey (2001) imply the existence of a Bayesian Nash equilibrium in monotone pure strategies. JEL classification: D72, D74, D82, C72

Existence and uniqueness of equilibrium in Asymmetric Contests with endogenous Prizes

This paper considers contests in which the efforts of the players determine the value of the prize. Players may have different valuations of the prize and different abilities to convert expenditures to productive efforts. In addition, players may face different financial constraints. This paper presents a proof for the existence and uniqueness of a pure Nash equilibrium in asymmetric contests w...

Payoff Shares in Two-Player Contests

In imperfectly discriminating contests with symmetric valuations, equilibrium payoffs are positive shares of the value of the prize. In contrast to a bargaining situation, players’ shares sum to less than one because a residual share of the value is lost due to rent dissipation. In this paper, we consider contests with two players and investigate the relationship between these equilibrium share...

Risk aversion in symmetric and asymmetric contests

We analyze existence, uniqueness and properties of equilibria in incompletely discriminating Tullock contests with logistic contest success functions, when contestants are risk averse. We prove that a Nash equilibrium for such a contest exists, but give an example of a symmetric contest with both symmetric and asymmetric equilibria, showing that risk aversion may lead to multiple equilibria. Sy...
